CBD Oil for Anxiety: What You Should Know

Anxiety is a natural and necessary response that helps our body to cope to threats to our safety and wellness. However, when we are unable to manage our natural responses to certain stressors, this anxiety can quickly become damaging to our bodies and impact our lives in many undesirable ways. This happens all too frequently in our society—an estimated 40 million adults in the United States are affected by anxiety-related disorders.

While there are many drugs available on the market to treat anxiety, many of these are either potentially addictive in nature or have some undesirable side effects that people would rather avoid. CBD oil is rapidly coming to the forefront of the world as an alternative for its ability to provide a viable natural means of managing symptoms of anxiety.

There are still many studies being done on the efficacy of CBD oil for anxiety, but so far it appears to be a safe alternative that is beneficial in treating disorders such as panic disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety and mild to moderate depression.

How Does CBD Oil Help with Anxiety?

Anxiety and depression are often treated with substances that specifically target the serotonin system. Prozac and Zoloft are two of the most well-known examples of serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. An SSRI blocks the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which in turn increases the availability of the substance in the synapses. As a result, brain cells transmit more serotonin signals, improving mood and reducing anxiety.

CBD is what’s referred to as a 5-HT1A agonist. 5-HT1a is a subtype of serotonin receptor, which means CBD can have some of the same effects as SSRIs do.

Studies also show that CBD could promote hippocampal neurogenesis, which is the birth of new neurons inside the hippocampus. These new neurons help to relieve anxiety and depression.

It is important to note that these are still studies in their early phases, and that so far the most fleshed-out studies have just been performed on animals. But there is quite a bit of potential in the field of CBD research and plenty of signs that the substance could be an outstanding means of treating anxiety and various mood disorders.
